Things That I Hate

When People Say Horse Riding Isn’t a Sport Because the Horse Does All the Work

I have dedicated a very large portion of my life to riding horses, and I am very good at it. Whether I’m riding or just hanging out with them, I love knowing that I have someone who loves me that is non-human. But I hate this:

“I do sports.”

“So do I.”

“No you don’t!”

“I ride horses.”

“That’s not a sport.”

“Why not?”

“ ’Cause the horse does all the work! All you have to do is sit there.”

“Okay then, get on!”

  1. It’s definitely a sport for the horse. As for the rider, it’s true that all they are doing is commanding the horse and that takes considerable skill, but the fact that it’s not physically demanding would mean that it isn’t a sport by definition if it weren’t for the fact that the horse is exerting itself. The fact that one individual involved is doing physically demanding work makes it a sport.

  2. Horses can change their mood. Riders have to have a lot of leg muscle. You could not get on a horse and handle it. It requires more strength than baseball or basketball. You have to use leg muscle to get the horse to do something. If the horse wants to, it can buck you off in a second and the rider has to stay on.

I ride horses and everything I can do with a saddle I can do without, just me and the horse. You couldn’t do what most riders do on a horse for five seconds. It is physically demanding and it is a sport.

  3. Too bad I actually have ridden horses before, and not the pony ride kind. I mean real, athletic horses. You have a point but don’t assume I don’t know what I’m talking about.

  4. Well, when you make an ignorant statement, I am forced to assume you don’t know what you are talking about. If you do not make foolish statements, I will not assume you are an idiot.
