I hate that I just got my mom a birthday card and the first thing she did was complain about how cold and impersonal it was because I didn’t write some long corny message about my love and gratitude! I wasn’t even going to get her one in the first place!

If she’s really that picky about things people give her, maybe you shouldn’t give her a card next time. On the other hand, she may be trying to teach you about society’s standards of politeness, and how an empty card is considered cold by most people, while a bit of writing inside personalizes it.
