Things That I Hate

“Ironic” Prejudice

If I don’t think it’s funny when someone tells me I belong in the kitchen or that all women are sluts, I’m treated like I just can’t take a joke. I’m supposed to laugh every time someone says “rape” even though most of the girls I know have been sexually assaulted. If I’m offended that someone makes a joke stereotyping all Asians or “Mexicans,” or jokes that all gay men are sex-crazed, I’m treated like I’m just not smart enough to understand the humor. No, you’re not being ironic if you make jokes that put down people. You’re being bigoted, and it’s the last thing from funny.

  1. People who tell someone that they have no sense of humor tend to have no sense of tact, and what they really mean is, “stop calling me out on the fact that I’m making offensive jokes and just let me do it.”

  2. If the sexes really are equal, jokes should be acceptable. Feel free to make some joke about men in response.

  3. Certain jokes are more acceptable than others. Jokes about rape are not funny. I, personally, don’t find any jokes amusing that denigrate any group of people unfairly. (A stereotypical joke about black people or women? Bad. A stereotypical joke about Scientologists being nutjobs? Fine. The difference is between groups you’re part of by choice or by birth. Something like ethnicity is not decided by a person, and as a result, stereotypes are not going to apply to many people, because the group is made up of many unique individuals. Whereas a religion or philosophy is (usually) joined by choice, so if it’s wacky, it’s likely the members who willfully joined it are as well, and are thus worthy of mockery.)
