Things That I Hate

Mainstream Music

Whatever happened to good music with meaning? Music today revolves around sex, breaking up, money, cars or it just doesn’t make any sense at all, and people only like it because society tells them to.

  1. It’s important to distinguish between whether you dislike mainstream music because it’s mainstream or because the music that is mainstream is bad. The latter is fine and good, and I agree, but the former is a dumb way to decide whether you like something. I’ve had friends who stop liking music (and other things) as soon as it becomes popular, even though they liked it before. If it’s good, it’s good, regardless of how many people like it. If it’s bad, however, the same applies.

  2. There is an enormous amount of great music out there. You’re just not likely to hear it on the radio. I stopped listening to the radio seven years ago, and since then, I’ve discovered hundreds of great musical artists online. I add them as friends on MySpace, to offer a little support, and I have over 400 now.

  3. “Music today revolves around sex, breaking up, money, cars.”

I get the feeling a lot of music is about these subjects, including a lot of great music.

  4. Actually, people like music because they like it (or at least, I do). Besides, most of those songs are about life. Welcome to it.
