Things That I Hate

Indian Sensitivity

My school’s mascot is an Indian, but we aren’t allowed to dress, say, draw, chant, or even yelp like an indian at our football games or around campus. Aren’t we supposed to support out school mascot? We cheer on as Indians in recognition of how cool they were. We aren’t calling them bloodthirsty savages!

  1. How do you know how they dress, draw, or chant? Most people’s impressions of Native Americans are far from accurate.

  2. How do you know what most people’s impressions of Native Americans are? Maybe they’re joking. Chill out.

  3. You have to understand that some people do think of Native Americans that way. It is disgusting and racist even though some people don’t even consider it racist. My girlfriend is Native American and her family has been insulted numerous times by these stereotypes. You have to be sensitive to what they have dealt with.
