Why, why, why did anyone invent them?

  1. The first viruses were created by computer experts in the early days of computers. At that time, computers were much harder to use as the mouse had not been invented and you had to type every command which could be found in your trusty 6" thick manual. Needless to say, only the experts would use computers. In the small communities of experts, people would program viruses to send to each others computers as practical jokes. As computers became more user friendly and accessible to the general public and the internet grew, people started programing viruses with more criminal intentions. Nowadays in our network driven society, being a hacker is quite a lucrative and popular business.
