The Word “Plaid”
Honestly, I don’t understand why “plaid” is spelled the way it is. Technically speaking, with the letters included in this particular word, it should be pronounced “pah-layed” but it’s actually pronounced “pah-lad”. Why don’t we just spell it “pladd”? The other letters are misleading, unnecessary, and stupid.

It’s a Gaelic word. It wasn’t pronounced that way until it was dumbed down by English speaking people. A variation of this explanation applies to every word we use that isn’t pronounced according to the way it’s spelled.
