My “British” Friend

I have a friend who has several relatives who are British. She has never lived in Britain and was born in America. Despite this, if I write “color” instead of “colour,” or “favorite” instead of “favourite,” she insists I’ve spelled it wrong, even though it’s the American spelling and how I’m supposed to spell it. She also chastises me for saying “Ma” or “Mom,” and becomes absolutely livid when I explain that I just simply wasn’t raised to call my mother “Mum!”

She also constantly rants about how awful America is. She never shuts up about it! Sure, I agree with some of her points, but after a while she just starts listing stereotypes and it gets plain offensive.

I love her to death, but her “Britishness” makes me want to throttle her.
