The game wouldn’t happen without the players. Think rationally, if you hate war, and war is caused by the countries/factions/groups/activists arguing, then war is an innocent object dreamt up by feuding “playersâ€. And I know it’s only major powers that start the war, but your troops have a choice to fight, as implied by the context.
