People Who Don’t Smile Back

I hate it when I am alone, walking down the street, and I see a large group of people coming the opposite way, so I acknowledge them with a small smile, but they don’t do anything, as if I’m not there. These people are the same age as me. Why can’t they just give me a small acknowledgment? Is it so difficult for some common courtesy these days?
