Things That I Hate

Cell Phones in the Hands of Teenagers

Teenagers, armed with cell phones, are reducing the value of true human interaction; “texting” has become a priority in their lives. Nothing is more irritating than seeing a teenager whip out their cell phone in the middle of a sombre or quiet event, such as a funeral, and text away about how “boring omg” this is.

Cell phones should only be given to those who need them (i.e. businessmen). Back in the day, teenagers had common sense and didn’t need mommy and daddy knowing exactly where they were at all times.

  1. It’s actually expanding human interaction. The internet in general has greatly improved communication between people. However, as it’s become more widely available, the more people have begun using them, and since the majority of people tend to be fairly stupid, stupid cell phone and internet users are the most obvious.

  2. Actually, Jonathan, it’s devaluing face-to-face communication.

I disagree with OP in the sense that some other people do need cell phones and not just business(wo)men.

  3. I wouldn’t say that it’s devaluing face-to-face communication so much as it’s distracting from it. If anything, an abundance of remote communication adds value to face-to-face communication on the rare occasion one does it. That’s not saying it’s preferable—one needs to balance their life and not overdo either. The various forms of communication all have value.

  4. I see what you mean.

I think what OP was getting at is that teenagers are so absorbed in their cell phones, they’re forgetting how to talk to people.

  5. I agree with OP, yet I disagree at the same time. I completely agree that the majority of my fellow teenagers are morons with their phones. Pulling it out at a funeral, a wedding, on a date, in the movie theater is simply disrespectful to the people you’re around. But, its not entirely our fault that mommy and daddy always want to know where we are. Parents are much more paranoid than they used to be.

  6. Almost all of the texting I do is for planning and communication. It allows me to make plans with people I would never otherwise see but want to keep a connection with. The only way to get a hold of them to meet in person is through texting. Used in the right way, texting can be a very good thing.
